What should I do if I am arrested?
If you are arrested by the police or federal government agents do not say anything. This is worth repeating: Do Not Talk to the Police or Federal Agents. Immediately ask to call an attorney.

Do not say anything to the police. You can tell them the basics: your name, where you live, where you work, but do not answer any questions regarding the circumstances that you were arrested for.
Basically, its best to just keep your mouth shut aside from demanding to call an attorney.
What people often do not realize is that the police can not help you in any way once you are arrested. Regardless of what they say they can do for you, they can’t help you with the prosecutor, they can’t help you with your sentencing, they can’t help you in any way. So, don’t talk to them.
Even if you are innocent and were in no way involved in the crime for which you have been arrested, ask for an attorney and do not speak to the police without a criminal defense attorney present.
Our New York criminal defense lawyers have years of experience with protecting client’s legal rights when they are in custody.
