Most New Yorker’s know the name Doc Gooden. Gooden, the former star pitcher for the New York Mets and then the Yankees, was recently arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, leaving the scene of an accident and child endangerment. Doc Gooden, now 45 years old, was driving his five year old son to school in New Jersey and was arrested after he fled the scene after colliding with another car and a bystander called 911. Thankfully, no one was injured in the collision.
Doc Gooden was the star pitcher of the New York Mets 1986 championship team, and went on to become a member of the 1996 and 2000 Yankees World Series teams. Gooden has struggled with drug addiction and alcoholism, and over the last twenty years has been arrested numerous times for drug and alcohol related charges. Doc Gooden, like his colleague Darryl Strawberry, has reportedly attended various drug and alcohol treatment centers across the country.
Gooden should be extremely grateful that he is facing DWI charges in New Jersey and not New York. New York has recently enacted a new law known as “Leandra’s Law,” which automatically increases the crime from a misdemeanor to a felony for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol with a minor under the age of 16 years old in the car. Doc Gooden would potentially be facing far more serious consequences if he had been over the New Jersey / New York border.
